There is a yielding charm to the riverside town of Mitchellstown, named after Major Thomas Mitchell, the explorer who found this land in the midst of his 900km journey to Melbourne from Sydney. Mitchelton winery was named after a derivation of this and is set on a picturesque estate, shaped overtime by the natural forces of the Goulburn valley. Vines were first planted on the estate in 1969 with the winery officially opening its doors to the public in 1973 and continues to be a popular destination for visitors with a thirst for wine and nature.
The winery is a one and a half hour drive from Melbourne via the Hume and Goulburn Valley Highways set in the expansive region just north to the Murray River allowing for the production of elegant wines. Australian architect, Ted Ashton, designed the cellar door and winery complex which is well known for it’s 55 metre tower and beautiful surroundings of the pristine Goulburn River and grasslands, offering an authentic Australian bush vista.
If getting back to the wilderness is on your agenda, Mitchelton winery offers a nature walk, a place to connect back with nature through wandering the riverbanks boarded with red gums and the chance to spot wildlife along the way that congregate around the billabongs. There is a picnic area along the Goulburn River banks to enjoy in the warmer months where you can indulge in a picnic hamper and a great bottle of wine from the cellar. As Mitchelton is focused on the sustainability and maintaining their striking surroundings whilst manufacturing home-grown wines, the winery ensures the protection of the distinct eco-system of the river that plays a crucial role in the natural cycle of its inhabitants. The team at Mitchelton do this through processes such as using water in the vineyard that is processed for irrigation reuse and re-vegetating the riverbanks with local fauna and gums. The winery’s memberships with Entwine (the Australian Wine Industry new Environmental best practice code) and the National Packaging Covenant paired with sustainable practices ensure the sensitive ecosystem within the environment is preserved in hope of keeping the many inhabitants of the river undisturbed.
In the cooler months, The Muse Restaurant and Cellar Door are the places to be. You can sit by the crackling fire with a glass of wine in the cellar door, following a luxurious long lunch in the restaurant that offers a menu changing seasonally. Finish lunch with a trip to The Ministry of Chocolate cafe, producing an array of fine quality chocolates and cakes.
Specialising in Shiraz Riesling and Rhone blends, Mitchelton has an outstanding reputation for it’s exceptional quality of wine offered. The winery has retained this reputation since the beginning, as only five years after officially opening to the public, Mitchelton was awarded for their Blackwood Park Riesling, a drop that remains well renowned today.
