With about 4 and half months before we kick off for the inaugural Four Vines Running Festival, we continue our Runner Journeys series. This time we speak with Cayla Owins who is preparing for the Shepparton Travel & Cruise Marathon at Four Vines.

Why do you run?

I run to keep fit and healthy, to have fun, to keep my sanity (I like to think of “pounding the pavement as therapy”)

How long have you been running and how did you get your start?

I have focussed on running now for the past 2 years, but prior to that would do an occasional fun run or event whilst I was doing other sports

What motivates you to keep running or to get through tough races?

What motivates me is when I reflect on how hard I have trained for that event or race. I don’t want to quit and give it all up for nothing. 

Which event are you running at Four Vines and what sort of training, if any, are you planning to do in the lead up?

I am running the Shepparton Travel & Cruise Marathon at Four Vines after a friend twisted my arm (quite easily!). I will maintain my current training style leading up to the event - long runs, speed work and tempos.

What is your favourite event and why?

My favourite event so far has been the Melbourne Marathon Festival - in 2017 I was a pace runner for the half marathon. It was an electric feeling helping other people achieve such big goals they had set for themselves 

Where is your favourite place to run and why?

I love discovering new areas and places to run, but currently enjoy the Yarra Trail, Gardiners Creek Trail and beach front in St.Kilda

Which groups do you run with and what makes them special?

I run with Hawthorn Running Group for speed work on Tuesdays. I also run with a group of dedicated runners on Thursday mornings at 5am for a tempo train session! 

What tips do you have for newer runners?

Don’t rush the process. Everything takes time. Enjoy your running and invest in a group or couple of friends to help inspire, motivate and get the best out of you.

What is your go-to pre race meal? 

Love spaghetti bolognese or lasagne (with garlic bread too!)

What's your favourite wine?

Love a good shiraz!
